The Martin is, based on its internal markings, a "Custom." One that was built for the CG/MF chain and sold as the "MMV."Īs such it is a bit controversial. A recreation of the famed Martin D-28 in construction, right down to the hand scalloped bracing, but with the herringbone scarfing and three-piece back like the even more upscale a HD-35. The DY-77 was 2nd from the top of the small model line. Their headstock said "Alvarez." Only inside would you see what marked these guitars as something special: "Alvarez by K. Yairi guitars back then didn't even sell with their own name and logo - at least not here in the USA. Some powered, yes - belt sanders and polishers and the like - but lots that were not even that. One where each instrument was the work of luthiers working with tools. One back from the era when Kazuo Yairi was himself overseeing the making of every guitar in his shop.
